Does Blockbuster Pay Royalties To Rent Movies/games?

Before every movie you watch, there is of course the very well know FBI anti-piracy warning that you cannot copy, rebroadcast, or reproduce movies without express written consent…blah blah blah. I am curious if Blockbuster/Hollywood Video found a loop-hole in the law that allows them to rent out movies/games, because it seems that there would be a conflict of interest if they then were allowed to sell the used copies of those DVD’s (and Blue-Ray discs) as “Previously Used”. It seems to me that they would “want their cake and eat it too” (or whatever the heck the saying is). If I were to open up a store and wanted to rent out movies/games, would I have to find someone to pay for it to be legal, or would I be able to? Also, I want to know if I charge admission to my (hypothetical) sports bar, do I have to pay a royalty to MLB to show a Cubs game on TV? To show movie on television/DVD? A video game tournament? Charging admission for people to come in and play video games (kinda like old-school arcades but with home consoles and televisions instead of coin-ops)? Answers to any of these questions would be appreciated. Thanks!

no. they buy a number of copies of a movie with a license to rent.

I actually work there. I know at Hollywood they make a deal with the Producers to a lot certain amount of copies for rent, and for about a month that’s usual the movie will be allowed to go to previously viewed. Which is given by the the producers with a tikey date (which means no PV copy of this movie before this date) now certain companies will make us send rental copies back before we are allowed to sell some as PV. For example 2 weeks ago I had to send 80 dark knight and 40 Get smart. Know get smart has been out for a while, but has yet to go to PV at my store and i think at any, and the same thing with dar knight which for some reason we had 7 pv copies of that. As for a sports bar, idk, but ask a bar I honestly dont think they pay for anything special. As for the arcade idea, if someone from there company found out your charging for letting people play games, I think they might try to get some money out of you. Also each time a movie or game is rented at least 2.50 is given to actors and producers. But with the older movies in the Category or library section, the royalities are already paid for, thus pure comp# for Video stores, thus they try to push you to rent old movies.
