Why Don’t Games Cost [much] Less Now That They’ve Really Reached “mass Market” Status?
When goods are produced in small, limited quanities, the price is usually very high. But then when something starts selling in the tens of thousands (much less MILLIONS) the price usually goes down, dramatically. For instance – when DVD players were a brand new thing, and very few people had them, they might have cost $1,000 each. But, once they started selling in the tens of thousands, they got down to 10% of that price, then later, 5% of that price.
Logically, shouldn’t the same thing happen to video game prices? Once they start selling hundreds of thousands of copies of a game, shouldn’t it drop down to a mere fraction of what games cost when they only sold in the tens of thousands of copies ranges? Say, $5 a game instead of $50? Keep in mind, a lot of games cost less to make than some Hollywood movies; and the media (DVD, box, manual, etc.) might cost anywhere from 25 cents to, at most, a couple dollars to make.
